The Cystic Fibrosis Trust wants you to grab a slice of the action by using cakes to help raise vital funds for medical research in The Big Cake Bake!

The Big Cake Bake launches this CF Fundraising Week (17-23 May) when people all over the UK will be holding coffee mornings and cake sales at work, school or home to raise money for the CF Trust. All you need is a venue, large slices of cake, plenty of liquid refreshment and generous guests! If you’re no great shakes at baking, you can always nip to the shops to buy some. You can host your event during CF Fundraising Week or at any other time convenient to you. Get the kettle on and join in the fun.

Cystic Fibrosis is the one of the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited diseases and affects the lungs and digestive system. Each week five babies are born with CF and sadly three young people die from the disease. The CF Trust funds research to treat Cystic Fibrosis, it works to improve the care of those with CF and provides support to families across the country.

Last summer a metal detecting enthusiast found a large Anglo Saxon treasure hoard in Staffordshire and now that the purchase price of £3.3m has been met, what is now known as the Staffordshire Hoard will be able to remain in the West Midlands area.

The funding was a combination of a campaign led by the Birmingham and Stoke councils, £50,000 from an anonymous benefactor, and a grant of about £1.3 from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF).

Chair of the NHMF, Dame Jenny Abramsky stated that the Staffordshire Hoard has a tremendous value in terms of heritage treasure and is the exact type of collection that the fund was set up to preserve.

Archaeologists have described the hoard as one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon finds, as it is made up of over 1,600 items such as processional crosses, sword pommels, and helmet parts.

There is more than 5kg of gold and an additional 1.3kg of silver contained in the hoard most of which is thought to date back as far as the seventh century.

Now that the fate of the hoard has been decided, the NHMF estimates that around £1.7m more in funds will need to be secured in order to make sure that the collection is adequately preserved, displayed, and studied.

As of now over 40,000 people have already viewed the collection while it was on display at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in September of 2009. It was also on view in February at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery located in Stoke on Trent where the queues had to be closed early due to the amount of people who wanted to see the collection.

The Tag Rugby Trust is a rugby-based charity that was formed in 2002, which helps to improve the lives of children in some of the poorest regions of the world. We currently work with orphanages and government schools in India, Mexico, Zambia, Uganda and Kenya using the game of Tag Rugby as our vehicle. We fund our tours through volunteers who pay to join the adventure and who work closely with the children in a coaching capacity. Almost without exception our volunteers say that the tour is a life changing experience for them.

Raffle tickets cost just £2, and every penny of the funds raised will go to the charity, helping to improve the lives of under-privileged children all around the world.

There are so many prizes on offer that there will be three draws made, with the first taking place on April 1st – tickets will be valid for every draw after the date on which it was bought.

The plan is to make the Rugby Raffle an annual event, with the aim of growing the prize list and raising plenty of money for charity – please help to make the first year is a success, and then look out for another in 2011.

To enter the raffle, please visit: www.justgiving.com/rugbyraffle2010

The Haiti Kids Kino Project is a voluntary project traveling to the Dominican Republic to set up a temporary social cinema for children affected by the Haiti earthquakes. The project will screen films for children and provide workshops, equipment, mentoring and tuition to make their own films. These films will be shown to Haitian audiences and then in the UK.

The Haiti Kids Kino Project is organised by Bristol’s The Cube Cinema own children’s project – Nanoplex, which aims to stimulate and encourage young people’s creativity and active learning. Nanoplex regularly runs children’s workshops, cabarets, film screenings and musical events in Bristol.

The Haiti Kids Kino Project is a micro-humanitarian goodwill project to provide an opening for escape, community, emotion and social occasion to a people and a place devastated by natural disaster. Haitian children are experiencing damage and despair, and further anxiety can grow through inaction, loneliness, isolation and boredom. Sharing the experience of making and watching films, while offering a temporary respite, the Haiti Kids Kino Project will contribute to quality of life through creating, sharing, reflecting, forging friendships and connections.

Patrick McCormick, emergencies communication officer for the UN says:

“The worst thing for children in natural disasters isn’t just the damage that they see around them, but also when they sit around with nothing to do. It ramps up anxiety and despair, and that’s what does even more damage.”

Esther May Campbell, BAFTA award winning director and Cube volunteer says:

“The Cube has always had a fantastically, hands on approach to things. As a provider of grass roots cultural exchange, this is the most direct humanitarian response it can offer. When children, who have suffered these kind of traumas have nothing to do, desperation and anxiety levels shoot through the roof. The Cube has skills, passion and networks, enabling us to create a mobile cinema for young people, intending to offer community, hope and distraction.”

The intention is not only to screen films for children, but also to provide workshops, equipment, mentoring and tuition for children to make their own films. These are then projected back to them, and back in the UK. The benefits include temporary childcare, community, sharing stories and the cinematic experience. This is intended to be a long term project that becomes a Haitian led and self sufficient initiative.

Two volunteers will be going to Haiti within the next month and the Cube project is raising funds to equip them with screens, cameras and films, vaccines and to cover travel costs.

The Haiti Kids Kino Project are urgently looking for donations of equipment and funding. There are many ways of donating:

1. To donate the old fashioned way, please send cheques made out to ”Cube Cinema Ltd” , The HAITI KINO KIDS PROJECT c/o The Cube Cinema 4 Princess Row Bristol BS2 8NQ

2. Or, by bank transfer to the Cube Cinema’s dedicated Haiti Kids Kino account.

ACCOUNT NAME: CUBE CINEMA LTD
ACCOUNT NUMBER: 20201907
SORT CODE: 16-58-10
Reference: Haiti Kids Kino Project

3. Or donate this way : The HAITI SCREENINGS

http://www.bristolticketshop.co.uk/cgi-bin/shop.cgi?group=Ha…
You can buy tickets online, by phone or in person from Bristol Ticket Office for a screening in Haiti or The Dominican Republic. And, if you can’t make it yourself (!), don’t worry because your seat will go to a Young Haitian Person, and the 5 price of a ticket, goes to raising funds for The HAITI KINO KIDS PROJECT.

Please buy as many tickets as you can. Its a great way to donate.

4. If you want to make a greater donation, please get in touch directly haitikidskino@cubecinema.com

The 19 year old college student who is known as Unigirl online, states on her website that she knows the consequences of sex with a stranger but that wants money to continue paying university fees.

She also thanked the many people who viewed her ad on the website and the approximate 1,200 who made offers. The student posted her virginity for sale through an auction on ineed.co.nz which has raised outrage among women in the Australian and New Zealand.

According to her add, she is fit and trim and has never been involved in a sexual tryst before. The website proprietor, Ross McKenzie, stated that he was not aware the ad existed and that while the ad is legal he will need to discuss its content with his business partner.

Regardless of their decision however, Unigirl has already closed her deal which means that his investigation is a little late. The website was launched in late August and usually attracts buyers and sellers for personal interests such as travel companies and partners.

National police spokesman Jon Neilson stated that although there was no breach of law involved with the transaction, the police would like to admonish that this is not a safe practice for others to emulate. He added there are plenty of problems and issues of personal safety that arise with something of this context.

On 28 January trail runners, Canadian, Natalie Samson and American Jeff Dean , mid 40s, will start their run to the famed temple of Preah Vihear, located some from the famous temple of Angkor. They will run is a total of 250 kms, along wide dirt roads from Siem Reap to Beng Melea temple to Koh Ker temple, once the capital of the Khmer empire to Kulen district to the stunning temple of Preah Vihear, now an UNESCO Heritage site and located near the Cambodia Thai border in north Cambodian.. Preah Vihear sits on a ledge on the sandstone Dangrek Mountains and ends dramatically on a cliff overhanging the Cambodian plains. The mountain is 547 metres high and translated from Khmer means ‘Mountain of the Sacred Monastery’; know too many as the ‘Temple in the Sky’.ne Filter One Family Progra

Running through the very heart of Cambodian and ending this is such a special Cambodian temple has been in their plans for some time. Jeff visited in Cambodia in 2008 and was struck by the people and the history of the country. Both are every day people, living in Kempville, south of Ottawa.

They are running to raise awareness for the need of water for Cambodian in Rural areas and will filter their own water each day from local wells, rivers and ponds etc as they run. They are open to donations which they plan to then invest in a program they have called ‘One Filter, One Family’, providing water filters and wells to families along this route. They chose Hidden Cambodia Adventure Tours, located in the shadow of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap and well established in remote areas and adventure travel, to provide all support and logistics for them during this grueling run. Paul Hay, director of Hidden Cambodia will travel with support staff (security, guide, cook and driver) to provide accommodations in tents each night where they stop, all food and all provisions and logistics. They will also stay at Hidden Cambodia’s own Eco lodge, located in Koh Ker village along the way, behind the massive Pyramid temple in Koh Ker. Jeffrey says “We wanted to work with Hidden Cambodia because they understand this part of the country, have established contacts and the humanitarian tours and efforts of past Hidden Cambodia guests has already been focused around building wells in this very area we will run through. We, like them and their past guests are very interested in accessto water for Cambodian people.

Each day they will run between 40 to 50 kms, stopping for water at leas every 5 kms.

Natalie and Jeff will start running to Preah Vihear temple from Angkor Wart at 8am on Jan 28th, 2010 and expected arrived at the mountain temple is February 2nd or latest February 3rd, 2010

You can keep up with the runners’ progress on their blog:
He has been training hard for this challenge of 546 miles comprising 3 marathons (78 miles) a day, on seven consecutive days starting on Saturday 9th January 2010 at noon and ending Saturday 16th January. Zoe Tyler from ITV’s ‘Loose Women’ will arrive at 11.30am to start him off this coming Saturday in Swindon’s Brunel Shopping Centre. Swindon Wild Cats and the Heart FM Angels will be there to sell Help for Heroes merchandise and 29 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps will see Mike through 20 hours running, two hours rest and two hours sleep daily. He hopes to raise £5,000 from this event and if you would like to sponsor him, go to www.justgiving.com/mikes-worldrecords or turn up to encourage him.

Ambitious Mike Buss is on a mission to break 20 world endurance records in just 12 months; a feat that has never been achieved before! Since November 2009, Mike has already broken 3 world records and raised £4,000 for Help for Heroes. The record Mike is going for this weekend is ‘The furthest distance covered on a treadmill in seven days by one man’. It currently stands at 468 miles which was set last summer by Lee Chamberlain, also a former soldier. Mike admits it is his toughest record attempt to date!

On a mission to break 20 world endurance records in just 12 months (a feat that has never been achieved before) Mike hopes to raise £100,000 by the end of 2010 and just over £1,000,000 by 2014. He plans to break 20 world records each year by taking on many of the world’s toughest challenges including the Marathon Des Sables across the Sahara desert in 2011. He will finish a world record breaking 5 yr campaign by climbing Mount Everest in 2014.

To counter the monotony of running for seven days on the spot on a treadmill, Mike is extending an open invitation to members of running clubs and the general public to help him beat this world record. He says ‘It’s a great challenge but could be really, really boring so I’m hoping to encourage members of the public to do their bit for Help for Heroes by running beside me on another StarTrac treadmill. We want them to sign up for 15 mins, 30 mins or an hour-long slot to create some variety. It will be a steady pace and in exchange for a donation, we will give each person a photo and a certificate to say they helped break this world record!’ So if you would like to have a go in aid of Help for Heroes, call 07791 545550 or email activelifeuk@hotmail.com to book your slot. Please turn up wearing suitable footwear and loose sports gear.

Mike’s world record-breaking 7 day run ends at 12 noon on Saturday 16th January 2010 when it is hoped that fellow soldier Matt Croucher will see him cross the finishing line. www.helpforheroes.org.uk is a charity close to Mike and Matt’s hearts.

Mike was discharged from the army on medical grounds after a bomb in Ireland permanently damaged his hearing in 1997. Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 24, from Solihull, West Midlands hit the headlines in February 2009 when he triggered a trip wire in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He dropped to the ground, covering the grenade but was blown into the air. His quick-thinking saved his companions. He survived with horrific injuries and was awarded The George Cross, one of the highest military decorations for acts of gallantry. Matt Croucher will be available to sign his new book entitled ‘Bullet Proof’.

If you would like to receive the Mike Buss newsletter to track his world record-breaking and fundraising progress just email info@mike-buss.com The new official website is www.mike-buss.com
